I Am A Craft Beer Drinker video released!

Friday, September 10th, 2010

Some of you may recall that back in May I joined the New Brew Thursday gang at Stone & Churchills Pub in San Marcos to shoot part of the “I Am A Craft Beer Drinker Video”. The shoot was so much fun and finally, the wait is over. The video is out!!!

You can check out the background of the video, how it came together and of course see the video on my Southern California Examiner page. It’s awesome!

Stone 14th Anniversary video recap, Part I: Greg Koch takes over…

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

So Friday night I was at the Brewer’s Reception and sat down to do a quick “Beers With…” segment with Greg so he could tell us all about the Anniversary events and the charities involved when he decided he wanted to play host.

Stone 14th Anniversary Celebration recap

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

The Stone Brewing 14th Anniversary Celebration culminated last Saturday with their annual brewfest which was bigger than ever, taking place on the campus of California State University in San Marcos. As usual, Stone had a great selection of beers from breweries all over the world. There was plenty of food including Mike’s Famous Beer Cheese and Arrogant Bastard Onion Rings, both of which are excellent. And this year Stone added a Rare Beer section which included some very hard to find beers from all over the world including the Brewdog Tokyo, the Struisse

From the combined efforts of the Stone Brewing Company, the many breweries who donated beer to the events, the volunteers who worked the events, the Dye-Hards who had their hair dyed green and the attendees of the Brewer’s Reception and the Anniversary Brewfest who simply bought a ticket and drank some great beers, a total donation of over $180,000 will be distributed to some great charities in the Escondido and San Marcos areas.

Thanks to everyone who was a part of helping to change people’s lives for the better.

I’ll be posting some Beers With segments with Greg Koch, Dr Bill and others from the 14th Anniversary soon.

Beers With Alex Carballo, Chef Stone World Bistro & Gardens

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

Last Saturday while hanging out at Stone for the “I Am A Craft Beer Drinker” video, I ran into Chef Alex Carballo. And since we have the Stone episode coming up soon, which Alex is of course featured in, I thought we’d take a few minutes to do a quick “Beers With…” segment with Alex and find out what’s going on in the Stone kitchens!

Thanks again to the New Brew Thursday crew for shooting this!

Shooting new “Beers With…” segments at Stone Brewing

Friday, June 4th, 2010

Today I’m headed down to Stone Brewing in Escondido for a couple of very special “Beers With…” segments. The first is with Dr. Bill Sysak, the Beverage Supervisor at the Stone World Bistro and Gardens. I’ve had the opportunity to get to know Bill and he is a truly fascinating guy that is truly fanatical about craft beer and my hope is that craft beer lovers all over that haven’t met him yet will have a chance to get to know who he is.

The second interview will be with Stone’s head brewer Mitch Steele. We’ll be talking about a brand new beer coming from Stone and of course, tasting it. Should be a good time!

Beers with Laurie Delk of “100 Beers. 30 Days.”

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

On Saturday, while shooting the “I Am A Craft Beer Drinker” video with the New Brew Thursday gang at Stone Brewing, I was introduced to an awesome craft beer lover (and fellow Southerner) by the name of Laurie Delk. Laurie has been working on a project called “100 Beers. 30 Days.” After talking to her for just a few minutes, I knew we had to have “Beers With” Laurie and thanks to the NBT crew, we did!

Check out the interview below and then check out her blog and her Facebook page.

Shooting the “I Am a Craft Beer Drinker” video

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

Today, in fact, as I type, I am hanging out with Stephen, John and Brad from New Brew Thursday, Ashley Routson (The Beer Wench) and a few other craft beer lovers as we shoot video for the new “I Am a Craft Beer Drinker” video, the followup to “I Am a Craft Brewer” video that was released last year.

We’re shooting at one of the best craft beer bars in North San Diego, Churchill’s Pub & Grille in San Marcos, CA. This pub is known for one of the best craft beer selections in the area, often getting cool & unique brews on tap before other places and they have great food too. I am currently enjoying one of my favorite Stone anniversary beers, the 12th, the Bitter Oatmeal Chocolate Stout, on tap! That is just too freaking cool!

So anyway, this is a cool video to be shooting because it’s all about people who enjoy a good craft beer, not just for the great taste but also because craft brewers are known for using quality ingredients, caring about their product and how it is distributed and caring about the environment both in production and in recycling.

I’m up soon, after Ivan, the owner of Churchill’s. For now, I’ll just enjoy my Stone 12th and wait my turn. By the way, we’ll be headed to Stone Brewing next to do some more shooting and of course, get my growlers filled and then we’ll hit Pizza Port Carlsbad for dinner on the way home. Good times!

Pints for Prostates LA Beer Festival

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Finally!! I have been wanting to announce the Pints for Prostates LA event for awhile and it has now reached the point where I can do so.

I initially got the idea for doing this event when I attended the Rare Beer Tasting in Denver at the GABF last year and had a chance to speak with the Pints For Prostates founder, Rick Lyke. Rick is a craft beer writer and homebrewer and had successful prostate cancer surgery in 2008. After his surgery, he was inspired to spread the message about the dangers of prostate cancer and do so through “the universal language of beer.” There have been many events all over the U.S. and it’s time for LA to step up to the plate and host an event.

The date for the event is June 19th, the day before Father’s Day, a day when people will obviously be thinking about the men in their lives. It will be held at Mr Pockets Sports Bar in Manhattan Beach, from 1pm-5pm. Tickets are $45 for a 5oz taster glass to be filled with over 20 craft breweries from around the world and a Woodford Reserve sample. There will also be food served from 1-3pm.

You can buy your tickets at www.pintsforprostates.org. Don’t wait, only 250 tickets will be sold!

Check out the Facebook event page for a list of breweries that will be pouring at the event. See you there!

Brewer’s Tea at 21st Amendment

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

On Sunday morning Andrew and I headed to 21st Amendment for the Brewers Tea, a brunch of sorts with some pretty cool beers being poured and sausages on the grill. We met some pretty cool people including Shawn O’Sullivan, the founder of 21st Amendment, Mitch Steele from Stone, Dave from Elysian and a really cool home brewer named Richard Brewer-Hay. He has a really cool story about a new brewery that he’s starting, literally, out of his basement.

So you guys know me… with all these cool people around, I decided to do some impromptu interviews. Check em out!

Judging for the Hi-Times Chili Cookoff!

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

I’ve just been asked to be a chili judge for the Hi Times Chili Cookoff in Costa Mesa this coming Sunday August 30! Being from Texas, I bring a pretty solid pedigree of chili cooking and judging and of course I know my craft beers which are what’s being served at the event. Stone, Maui Brewing and others will be on tap. I can’t wait!

If you’re in LA… come and see me and enjoy some beer and chili!
